Physical Description:
Adeline is the picture of homely. Well into her twenties she still looks much like a very tall schoolgirl.

Although she stands at five ten she has a lanky and almost boyish appearance, accentuated by a sprinkle of freckles over her nose a small chest and her tendency to spend most of her time in the dark fitted suit that she wears for her work. Her black hair is very long (down to the backs of her knees) and whips about everywhere. Her eyes are a soft tone of blue, although they shift lighter and darker depending on how she uses them.

Special Abilities:
Adeline has incredibly detailed distance eyesight. She can focus very specifically on distances ranging from ten feet to ten meters as if she were adjusting her eyeballs like a pair of binoculars. The backs of her eyes contain reflective lenses that allow her to see well in minimal light. These qualities add up to make her an amazing long distance sniper, however she is badly farsighted as a result of her abilities and requires a pair of glasses to allow her to see anything within five feet of her clearly.

Adeline also has a furiously fast metabolism. She is constantly eating to fuel a fast-beating heart and high-energy body. She will eat three times as many calories as a normal human per day and prefers heavy meaty protein to vegetables or any other such delicate fare. As a result she has grown some particularly nasty teeth…

Her jaw hinges like a snake’s, able to dislocate and reconnect with ease and allow her to swallow massive portions. Although she would never choose such fare over good cooked food, she is capable of digesting freshly dissected raw meat and could swallow most animals smaller than a racoon whole without any ill effects. Her baby teeth were viciously sharp and never fell out. Instead they now make up the inner set of two rows of sharp fangs, as if she were a meat-eating shark.

Personality:
Adeline’s life is about just getting by. She considers herself lucky to have a beating heart and a good job working for a train guard company. She enjoys the bit of travel her career affords her and LOVES working with the weapons she’s given. Always a fan of target shooting and pistol tricks she feels she’s pretty much landed her dream job.

Her salary gets split between feeding herself and paying for her small apartment in Kyrne. The leftover cash gets sent to her foster brother, Winbrook, a young boy that grew up in the same orphanage that she did in The Citadel. Winbrook is still living there and she writes to him all the time, holding her promise to keep in touch with him when she struck out on her own.

Adeline is by most means a business like girl. She wants to do her job, go laugh with her co-workers, defend the livelihood of her employers and get paid at the end of the week. However she has her own longings like most women her age. Although not really the type to settle down with a family she finds herself seeking for a partner among the men she meets.

Occupation:
Adeline works as a guard for a train security company called ‘Lockeline’ (named for its founder and Adeline’s top boss, Walter Locke). She leads a set of five men – the night crew of the fifteen people usually assigned per train (five people for day, five people for swing shift, five people for night). She’s been with the company for six years, which is rather an accomplishment considering the high turnover rate of her job. A lot of train guards get killed, and most of those die on night shifts. Six years of dark crew work is a lot of seniority and her salary has begun to reflect her mettle.

Faults and Weaknesses:
Although friendly to most people and preferring to pass for human, Adeline has no qualms about flashing her gifts around – particularly her teeth – at people who have pissed her off. She holds grudges like no ones business, never losing track of a cent she might be owed or a slight as yet unrepaid.

She also has a certain conscience about how richer people treat the poor, something that’s stuck with her since her childhood of meagre means. She has no patience for especially rich clients on trains – often slighting genuinely kind people because of their status alone. She has a real actual black book of particularly haughty rich people that she will refuse to work for if she can afford the loss of hours.

Adeline doesn’t have much tolerance for very young children. She is unable to stomach the sound of crying babies and toddlers after years sharing a bedroom with often-neglected young ones at St. Aloysius Orphanage in The Citadel. An angry noblewoman also once complained about her to Walter Locke in person after Adeline threatened to swallow the client’s young son whole if he didn’t shut up and stop asking annoying questions while she was trying to sleep between shifts.

History:
Adeline was a foundling baby, left on the doorstep of the St. Aloysius Orphanage when she was barely a few hours old. She was taken in by the Orphanage Headmaster Alexander Renaldo and raised within the crowded walls, tangled with and loved by an overlarge family of other parent-less children.

Unlike many abandoned infants, as a grown up Adeline took no interest in seeking out her parents and wasted none of her time wondering why they left her. If asked she would say, “They deserted me. They don’t deserve to know me, and I can’t miss what I’ve never had.”

Instead she built a family of the children she grew up with, becoming sisterly to some, motherly to others. At the age of nineteen, with money from odd jobs around The Citadel saved up, Adeline broke out from her home and took off on a train to find work and a new life in Kyrne.

On the first weekend that she arrived there was a sharp shooting competition running in the town square. She signed up on a whim and proceeded to slaughter her competition on the long distance target range.

Walter Locke, watching the whole event, pulled her aside while she was still wearing her blue ribbon on her coat and offered her a job on the spot. She has worked as a train guard for Lockeline Security Services for the past six years.

Writing Sample:
Adeline let out a deep breath, smiling as the wind whipped her hair. The landscape around her was washed with moonlight and as peaceful as she could ask for it to be. The smell of gunpowder still lingered on the clothes from the rapid reloading she had had to handle a few miles back, but that was nothing that wasn’t perfectly common around this area of the country.

One of the pirates had looked straight at her from between the roll bars of his dune buggy before she took his head off. For a moment he’d looked scared and it took her another three shots to register that he had recognised her face. Part of her thrilled at the thought that he knew who she was. A reputation was a nice thing to have, even if it was a reputation for killing people horribly from great distances.

Pulling a cigarette out from behind her ear she pinched it between her lips and freed her lighter from her pocket, turning her back to the wind and cupping the tip and the flame until the paper caught. One long drag later her body felt instantly looser. From below there was a rap on the roof of the car, then a head popped through the hatch.

Jerry was looking at her from over the top of his glasses. “Ad, aren’t you cold out here? Why the hell you always sit on the roof, you must freeze your ass off.”

Adeline smirked, then groped her butt a bit. “Did I? I dunno, feels like it’s still attatched.”

“Smartass. You want your lunch or what?”

“How nice a lunch is it?”

He tossed her a heavy brown paper bag and she caught it easily in one hand, melting at the first sniff.

“Oh my god you saved me steak from in town yesterday! Jerry, I love you.”

“You always say that.”

“I always mean it!” she mumbled, her lunch already having displaced her cigarette, stuffed halfway into her mouth followed by a vicious bite to tear it in half.

“I’m going back in Ad. Call if you want anything.”

She nodded, turning hungrily back to her lunch. This night just got better and better.
