Name: Illyria Trapp (Ill-ear-ee-ah Tr-ap)

Age: 37

Race: Human

Physical Description:

Tall and blonde, with the fine aristocratic features of a European noblewoman, Illyria is tougher than she looks. Most who encounter her think of her as light and willowy and would guess that she weights 110 to 115 lbs, however she weights closer to 150 pounds, all of it pure muscle. She has a crushingly strong handshake and above average speed and endurance for a human.

Illyria's physical tone is something she acquired from years of hard labour out in the desert and she has rigidly maintained it after arriving home because she found that she felt vulnerable when she let herself relax and get weaker. She's badly paranoid of being attacked or having to fend for herself again and exercises and eats in certain ways to keep herself at peak shape in case she needs that strength again.

She has bright blue eyes which are usually set behind glasses, a mild prescription for nearsightedness that she can do most things without. (She mainly needs them for reading and any detail work like gun-calibration.)

Skin damage from years in the sun has given her some premature wrinkles and she looks probably five or six years older than she actually is.

Special Abilities:

Although human in every sense of the word Illyria has more than a few trained skills and other advantages. Aside from the fortune she has inherited from her parents’ investment in Kyrne's mining industry and the many service providers that she has at her beck and call because of her support for their businesses, she is a fair shot with a pistol and deadly as a hand to hand fighter.

Well practiced in fighting with knives Illyria began training to fight hand to hand with several men who accompanied her on her journey though the desert a few months before the caravan left. However it took her being pushed to the breaking point before she could bring herself to use what she was taught to truly kill another living creature. After the first time, it all became much easier...

Illryia's knife fighting is not an art, nor does it really have a modicum of finesse to it. It is a raw fight or flight reflex - hitting this spot gets me a kill, this one an incapaciation etc. She doesn't dodge between opponents like the wind sustaining no injuries herself, she just hits the more vital places first because she has been taught to and has a talent for seeing them.

She has been known to kill all of her opponents even when the odds are as great as five to one against her, under extenuating circumstances. Although she kills quickly in battle she is not immune to damage and comes out of a fight as scratched and broken and bleeding as anyone else, just slightly less dead than everyone else.

She also takes an unhealthy pleasure from torturing those who have crossed her and will spend days at a time breaking down others for information that she might need.

Although Illyria has no special natural resistances to injury her back is a mass of scars from injuries sustained during her long journey through the lava valley and the Sabaku desert– the compounded damage of sunburns, fistfights and repeated cruel punishments. This tough layer of flesh makes it slightly more difficult to injure her (thicker skin requires more force to puncture so she would likely be unhurt by blows that were not intentional), however nerve damage has also stripped her of most feeling from the nape of her neck to the small of her back. Although she can feel pressure, a light touch on her shoulder or someone stroking her back evokes no reaction.

Those who stood by Illyria during her years in the desert are all her friends and comrades and pretty much honour and obey her unquestioningly as a matter of faith. Most of those people (20 in all) work for her in the mining company or at her personal home and can be called on for damn near any favour and used to exercise her influence elsewhere.

Personality:

Illyria likes business people, because business people do what she tells them to. If you do as she asks and address her with respect she rewards you handsomely for the courtesy. It is her belief that rewarding people for their good work promotes loyalty and happiness in subordinates and she does her best to make sure that everyone in her employ is happy and thriving and doing as asked.

Although she dedicated most of her young life to studying it, Illyria has lost her previous fascination with the Pre-Cataclysm world. She hordes the delicate technologies she recovered from the dead cities like items in a museum – both fascinated by them and loathing them, hidden in her basement.

In her eyes, the losses of her voyage were much greater than the gains and she is enraged by people who still wish to adventure into the desert to find the ruins. She tells them they are setting themselves up to die, or if not that to come back broken. More than anything she just wants to forget that the desert voyage ever happened and keep anyone else from enduring her fate.

She does her best to be formal and courteous, wanting to appear a proper lady in every sense of the word, always finely dress. However, at certain times – particularly with meals and when she's been drinking – her more feral qualities come through. She has a tendency to want to eat meat with her hands and teeth instead of a fork and knife, and often dissolves into sobbing rants and nightmares when she's drank a little too much after dinner.

In public she is very much an upper class woman, but with the distinct air of 'new money'. There are obvious gaps in her mannerisms and actions that make her paranoid and shaky - like a lady at her coming out ball trying her best to act perfect and constantly making mistakes. Although most people in the Citadel respect her position they either scorn her for the way she falters in public (a reaction she gets most from men) or (the most common reaction of other women) they are overly forgiving of her errors because they feel she's been traumatized by her 'foolish young adventures' and they shower her with sympathy and 'forgiveness' that she finds condescending.

No matter how much she attempts to fit into high society the bottom line is that she has grown to be more comfortable in the presence of the lower classes, feeling at home with others who know what it is to work hard (and who also often know what it is to fear for your life).

Occupation:

After returning from the desert Illyria came into money – a lucky strike considering her last five years had hardly been profitable. Her parents had died while she was travelling, but their confidence that she would make it home lead them to lock down all of their investments and leave them to her in their wills.

Illyria now owns 50% of her parent's greatest investment; Grand & Lowes, Kyrne's largest mining operation. Her income comes from the company and it's profits. She was also left her childhood home in the Citadel (where she now lives) and most of her parents possessions.

The miners in her company essentially owe her their livelihood and tend to take no issue with doing her small favours, particularly considering that the rewards they can glean from doing her a special service can be as substantial as a month's supply of food or a guarantee of proper medical care and immunizations for their families.

Faults and Weaknesses:

Five years in the desert and especially slugging across the black lava plains gave Illyria a fear and loathing for the sun. She spends all her time outside beneath a parasol with all of her skin covered except for her face, afraid to be exposed. Although she can endure it to an extent, too much humid heat makes her faint. She prefers cold baths, cold water, cold air.

She dresses in white as often as possible to avoid attracting the sun when she has to be outside. This constant shielding herself has all but destroyed the hardy tan she had years ago. Although permanent damage has darkened her skin a few shades, she is still growing pale and will sunburn about the same as an average person.

She often sleeps poorly, plagued by nightmares of wandering bare and burning in the black fields below the Crest Volcano. She keeps water at her side at all times, struck by an insatiable thirst whenever she is nervous or upset, and she is deeply embarrassed by her scars.

Upon returning from the desert Illyria found that her wounds were no longer badges of honour but a mark of the demon she became out under that blazing sun, a symbol of shame for a lady of her stature, and she does all she can to keep that part of herself buried in the civilized lands.

But her temper comes unwound when someone makes her angry, she falls back on the wild law of killing those who won't obey in order to keep her power, and as if out of her own control she will torture to teach and kill to silence.

Players Note - Illyria is actually at the early stages of developing Disassociative Identity Disorder (a.k.a. Multiple Personality Disorder). The part of her that keeps rearing up out of all the hell she went through in the desert is beginning to break off from her base personality and become something of it's own. At a point during playing time Illyria will start having amnesiac episodes, presuming at first that the 'inner demon' is gone, then realizing that she is sleepwalking as a separate vicious self. I may at some point down the line then make a separate account and name for her 'darker' side and run different plots with each 'version' that will then affect one another due to the shared body.

History:

Born and raised in the Citadel, Illyria spent much of her childhood as a proper young lady. She was as high society as it got in the city, the daughter of hardworking business people who fought their way up from the bottom and taught her the value of everything as she grew up.

Illyria took an interest in business and in history, spending hours fawning over the few published volumes concerned with theories on the world before the destruction and the sorts of technology that might have once existed in the old cities.

At the age of 28 Illyria cleaned out her investments and threw all of her life's savings into sending an expedition of 100 people from various trades out beyond the Falkirin Mountains to look for technology lost in the ancient cities. They travelled in three massive caravan carts towed by teams of Dakkul, through the valleys between the mountains, across the lava plains on the far side of the peaks (created by the now-dormant Crest Volcano) and then out into the endless burning sand of the Sabaku Desert.

The trip was arduous, leaving half the crew dead by the time they found the lost cities and only a quarter remaining on return. The sun out in the lava plains drove most of the crew mad from exposure and a rash of infighting stripped the expedition leaders of their command. The strongest of the men declared himself 'king', appointing a gang of eight men who were his closest companions on the voyage as 'princes and masters of all'. The group immediately took to using the weaker crewmen as slave labour and the women for personal pleasure.

Not many of the adventurers were rough frontierlike people, they were educators and noblemen and people with no experience with a hostile takeover, fighting or the like. The majority felt that there was nothing they could do and any small uprisings were quelled with torture and death.

This went on for ten months of the second year of the expedition until the underlings that were still alive finally rose up. All they required, really, was a leader...
After being strapped to the exposed deck of the caravan trailer to burn because she had dared to ask for more water Illyria had very suddenly had enough. The last thread of her humanity burned away under the sun and she, for the first time, dared to try to seize a weapon from her 'prince' who released her from her shackles. Why he was still startled by her having taken his weapon she tore his throat out with it, her first murder, and not her last.

She stormed the holds, freed her fellow underlings and went for the captain. With the whole furious group unbound and roaring in her wake the 'royalty' were ruined and thrown from the caravan to bleed and die in the desert sand.

With the 'king' and his crew gone and the remaining travellers touting her as their saviour Illyria seized her power over the ship and declared herself not just leader but dictator. She became wild and angry, a sort of pirate queen, and she was forced to kill many good men over the next years to avoid a mutiny and ensure her power.

Shortly after her coup the caravan reached a dead outlying city, half ruined and deserted. What they found left them utterly disillusioned.

Hulls of buildings ravaged by years of desert wind, remnants of corpses were few and far between and not enough of any bodies to tell who or what had built the place, and the only intact technologies were alien shreds.

They plunged on during the trip in the hope that the old cities would bring them something wonderful and it would all be worth it. After scouring the city and finding that nothing they found was understandable (or otherwise it was too big to take home) they gave up hope and turned away, hauling along the broken relics of their dream. Their 'reward' was a drop in the bucket after hoping for a rainstorm and they couldn't stand the sight of it.

The caravan stayed only four days before turning for home.

More infighting and more deaths followed on the journey back and when the remaining twenty survivors staggered through the gates to the Citadel none of them could really believe they were home.

They split up the bits of technology between them, hiding them away in their homes, agreeing with horror and conviction that no one should see what they came home with. Everyone but them should consider the mission a failure. They found nothing, they saw nothing. No one else should endure their horror for so little that was so useless.

Twenty people came home from the voyage, including Illyria. Ten artifacts that they brought back were divided among the five closest of the group, Illyria, Dax Brewster, Ameline Tamber, Robin DeSalvo and Douglas Gaiman.

Ilyria has three items, Dax has one largish one, and the others have two each.

Illyria's possessions include a Blackberry or other similar mini-computer device (the casing is broken and of course any battery that would have given it power is dead, it is simply a hull), a digital watch that could tell you what time it was February 10, 1982 in Singapore... if it's battery wasn't fried, and a badly damaged textbook. It's a history textbook, but it reads in a foreign language and Illyria is still working on trying to translate it somehow.

Illyria still holds a strong camaraderie with the few men and women who survived with her and still employs most of them with the fortune she's inherited from her parents. She spends most of her time inside, locked away from the sun as much as possible and still struggling, after four years home, to relearn how to be a proper woman again.

I love your latest post in "Ferocity." :-*

I'm glad we played so much with Kale and Lilah becaues I feel I have a better grasp on the Lilah/Illyria dichotomy to understand what Illyria's going through and play this Raziel scene better now.

Yays for understanding!

Just wait till Illyria decides to bite her lip till it bleeds. Then Raziel can kind of snap a little and it'll be awesome! XD *wiggles*
